Number Scheme (abstracted and edited from WL document for the graduate program)

1.                   Course number assignment

·         All proposed BME courses will be classified in nine different categories according to subject.

·         Courses of “core” nature and general BME interest should be given numbers BME X00 - X09.

·         Courses with emphasis on biology or the basic sciences pertinent to BME including molecular engineering, systems biology, and genomics and proteomics should be given numbers BME X10 -  X19.

·         Courses with emphasis on measurement of BME phenomena or design of medical devices should be given numbers BME X20  -  X29.

·         Courses addressing electrical engineering phenomena or processes, as well as imaging in BME processes and computing should be given numbers BME X30 - X39.

·         Courses addressing biomechanics and related phenomena or processes should be given numbers BME X40 -  X49.

·         Courses addressing cellular engineering, tissue engineering and related phenomena or processes should be given numbers BME X50  -  X59.

·         Courses with emphasis on chemical or mechanical engineering aspects of BME concentrating on transport phenomena and their applications should be given numbers BME X60  -  X69.

·         Courses with emphasis on biochemical and process engineering should be given numbers BME X70  -  X79.

·         Courses with emphasis on biomaterials, nanotechnology and drug delivery should be given numbers BME X80 -  X89.

·         Courses that cover specialized seminar lectures, projects, directed readings, and  new or “experimental” courses that will  be taught only once or twice, self-paced courses,  and BME educational systems should be given numbers BME X90 -  X99.

2.                   Other characteristics

·         Courses usually taught in the Fall semester should be given an odd number.

·         Courses usually taught in the Spring semester should be given an even number.

Following this scheme here is the current assignment of numbers for our required BME courses with the credit hours in ( ).
